A practical FAQ on the Captain Toad & Talking Flower amiibo: how NFC figures work on Switch, what to expect from the Super Mario Bros. Wonder figure, and buying advice.
Quick answer
The Captain Toad & Talking Flower amiibo is a display-worthy Super Mario Bros. Wonder collectible with built-in NFC, so it works like other Nintendo Switch NFC figures: you tap it on a compatible controller to trigger in-game amiibo features. Buy it for the figure first, and treat the NFC function as a bonus.
What the figure actually includes
This is one amiibo depicting two characters: Captain Toad in his explorer gear and the trumpet-shaped Talking Flower, mounted together on a grassy base. That pairing is the main reason to choose it over a solo figure, but it also means you are buying a diorama-style piece rather than a single-character statue. The catalog does not list a base size or weight, so if shelf space is tight, plan for a wider footprint than a standard single-figure amiibo.
Where NFC figures fit and where they don't
Amiibo NFC works through compatible Nintendo Switch controllers and readers, not through the console itself. If your setup relies on a controller without an NFC touchpoint, the figure will still display well but you will not be able to scan it without adding a compatible reader or controller. The catalog confirms built-in NFC but does not list which specific games or rewards this figure unlocks, so check the in-game amiibo menu for the exact bonus before assuming a particular unlock.
Collector versus player: an honest trade-off
Collectors get a bright, characterful Super Mario Bros. Wonder piece that reads clearly on a shelf, and the dual-character base makes it stand out from generic Mario-series figures. Players get a scannable NFC figure, but the in-game payoff is usually smaller than the price difference suggests. At the listed catalog price of USD 32.99 against a USD 49.99 comparison price, the value case is stronger for display than for gameplay alone.
Captain Toad amiibo FAQ
- How does amiibo work?
- An amiibo figure contains an NFC chip. On Nintendo Switch, you tap the figure on the NFC touchpoint of a compatible controller or reader, and the game reads the figure's data to unlock or trigger its supported feature. The figure itself needs no battery or pairing. Check that your controller has an NFC touchpoint before buying for gameplay.
- Is this a Talking Flower amiibo too?
- Yes. The figure combines Captain Toad and the Talking Flower on one base, so it serves as both a Captain Toad amiibo and a Talking Flower amiibo in a single collectible rather than two separate figures.
- Will it unlock specific Super Mario Bros. Wonder content?
- The catalog confirms built-in NFC but does not list the exact in-game rewards. Open the game's amiibo menu or the official Nintendo amiibo compatibility page for the current, title-specific details before you buy for a particular unlock. Verify the specific reward in-game rather than assuming it from the figure's theme.
- Is it a good first amiibo for a child?
- It works well as a first figure because the dual-character scene is easy to recognize and the NFC tap is simple. Supervise younger children, since small figures and thin parts can be dropped or mouthed, and keep the figure away from heat and moisture.
- What should I check before buying?
- Confirm three things: your controller or reader supports amiibo NFC, you are happy with the dual-character base size for your shelf, and the price you pay reflects that the main value is display. The catalog lists USD 32.99 against a USD 49.99 comparison price, so compare that with current listings. Decide display-first or gameplay-first before checkout; it changes whether this figure is worth it.
