How to Set Up a Bathroom for Toddlers

Quick Answer

To set up a bathroom for toddlers, focus on safety, accessibility, and fun. Start with a low-step stool, then add a kid-friendly toothbrush holder, a soft hooded bathrobe, and a cheerful shower curtain to make the space inviting.

Step-by-Step: Set Up a Toddler Bathroom

1. Step 1: Create a Safe Floor: Place a non-slip bath mat outside the tub and another inside. This prevents slips when your toddler steps out. Check that the mat has suction cups or a rubber backing. Skip mats that slide; test them before your child uses the bath.
2. Step 2: Add a Step Stool: Choose a sturdy, wide stool with a non-slip surface. Place it in front of the sink so your toddler can reach the faucet and toothbrush holder independently. Avoid stools with sharp edges or that wobble. A stool that's too tall can tip.
3. Step 3: Install a Kid-Friendly Toothbrush Holder: Mount or place a toothbrush holder at your toddler's eye level. The Thomas & Friends 'Color Block' Toothbrush Holder is lightweight resin and easy to wipe clean, making it perfect for little hands. Check that the holder is stable and won't tip if bumped. Wipe it clean weekly to prevent mold.
4. Step 4: Hang a Fun Shower Curtain: Replace a plain shower curtain with one that adds color and pattern, like the Avenue Home Fashion Palace Shower Curtain in aqua. The polyester fabric is machine washable, so you can keep it fresh. Ensure the curtain rod is securely mounted. A heavy curtain can pull it down if not anchored.
5. Step 5: Keep a Hooded Bathrobe Handy: Hang a soft, hooded bathrobe like the EVERYDAY KIDS Hooded Baby Toddler Unisex Bathrobe on a low hook. The terry cloth material dries quickly, and the 3D elephant design makes post-bath snuggles fun. Choose a robe that's machine washable and dryable. Avoid robes with loose buttons or decorations that could be a choking hazard.
6. Step 6: Organize Bath Toys and Supplies: Use a mesh bag or small bin to store bath toys near the tub. Keep shampoo and soap in a caddy that your toddler can't reach without help. This prevents mess and keeps the space tidy. Drain toys after each bath to prevent mildew. Replace any that show mold.
